TRINDER
GENEALOGY & FAMILY HISTORY

BRADFIELD & ENGLEFIELD
This is the branch of the Lewis Trinder.
It is always difficult to put into words a family history. You never really know how or where to start and its bad enough trying to write your own branch let alone someone elses, enough said, here goes anyway!
This particular Branch, we shall start with Lewis William Trinder. After all he is the person who is responsible for my trying to write this anyway.
A couple of months into researching my own tree and I was finding a lot of dead ends, so I decided to adopt a new approach. Fly posting!
Well sort of anyway, I sent out a series of letters to Trinder's who's address's I had found on www.192.com.
You would be amazed at the amount of people who couldn't even reply, even when I had supplied a S.A.E as well!!!
One or two did reply, and Lewis was one of those who did, although the initial letter was sent to his son who then passed it on to his father.
Included in the letter was a descendants chart for Lewis's branch. At first, we thought there maybe a direct link, but this was soon dismissed. There were a lot of similar names but alas no link.
Recently, Lewis has provided me with some of his and his families background, which I will try my best to mix with the earlier information and record it on this page.

Lewis Trinder recalls:-

I am pretty well out on Limb with my family history for the following reasons, my Grandfather Henry Trinder 1852-1917 had eight children as under.

1 Henry George Trinder (Born 1873) emigrated to Australia one Daughter.
2 Martha Annie Trinder (Born 1875) Married but no Issue.
3 William Arthur Trinder (Born 1878) 3 Daughters.
4 Charles Trinder (Born 1880) Killed in France 1917 - No known family
5 Joseph Trinder (Born 1883)
6 James Trinder (Born 1885) emigrated to Canada one daughter.
7 May Trinder (Born 1891) married Harold Richards - one Son one Daughter
8 Alfred Thomas Trinder (Born 1893) My Father.

So when you look at that you will understand why I am out on a limb, I seem to be the only one who carried the name down, which makes the contact with another Trinder more interesting.
Henry Trinder who after retiring as Manager of Oxted Chalk Pit became 'Landlord' of the Bell Inn at Oxted where he died, Bill (William) was the only one of his children who stayed in that area, and I believe his 3 daughters and their families may still be there, but if they married their name will be different. My Father was sent to 'Ardingly College' possibly because he was a bit of a rebel, but he ran away from there at the age of 15 put his age up by six months, and joined the Royal Navy, he did nearly 3 years 'Boys Service' 22 years 'Adult Service' was pensioned in 1934, he was then recalled to the Royal Navy in June 1939 as a reservist doing a further 3 years before being invalieded out in 1942, his total service was 28 years, he was at the Battle of Jutland, for which he according to his 'Service Certificate' was awarded 5 shillings and one penny prize money.
My Parents were married on St George's Day 1923, and I was born at 'The Boot Inn' Winslow Buckinghamshire (Does this make me the Winslow Boy?) on 13th September 1924, and am an only child.Father was away at sea, and Mother was Manageress of 'The Bedford Park Hotel' in Streatham London, I was brought up by my Grandparents who in 1927 left the Boot Inn and moved to Akeley just North of Buckingham Town to 'Vine Cottage' there which I still own.

As I mentioned previous, my Dad left the 'Navy' in 1934, and it was shortly after this together with my Mother they became Landlords of 'The Liverpool Arms Hotel' in Haywards Heath, this was the first time I really knew my Father as he had gone to the far East on a three year commission on HMS Effingham when I was seven, I lived with them until I volunteered on my 18th birthday for the 'Royal Navy' two weeks later I was in training at HMS Collingwood, a further seven weeks after that I was at sea, and so it was for the next four years being at sea most of the time and heavily involved in lots of incidents from the North Atlantic to the Far East.
I left the Navy in 1946, and went back to the job I had at Lloyds of London before joining the service, but having led such an eventful life I couldn't settle and having married on St Valentines day 1948 it was in 1949 I reverted to the family trade and became a 'Publican' for the next 25 years retiring from that in Dec 1973.
I had two Jobs between then and 1982 when I gave up work altogether and did voluntary work mainly with the 'Sea Cadet Corps' the 'RNLI' 'Royal Naval Association, and the 'Poppy Appeal', which I am still doing.

This story gets even more interesting as you will soon find out.

Going back to my early research, I corresponded with a Trinder from Florida called Charles (Chas). I got in touch with him, if I recall it right, by finding his name on AOL's member directory.
He gave me a brief family history in a single e-mail which for some reason I printed and kept, even though we were not related.
This e-mail sat in one of my files for 3 years until one day I decided to have a sort out. I sat reading through all my old research when suddenly Oxted caught my eye. Where had I seen that before?
Lewis's e-mail!!!!
And whats more, Chas's Grandfather was called Charles and he had also died in the first world war! This was almost identical to Lewis's details of his Uncle Charles.
I e-mailed Lewis, to tell him the news.
Could they be related?
We both posed the question......did Chas still have the same e-mail address?
We both e-mailed Chas on the same day!! But a week passed and we got no reply.
I then decided to try and find via the internet if there were any Charles Trinder's listed as living in Florida. Found an address and posted a letter.
In the mean time, Lewis tried another route, and in a cunning plan, he tracked down Chas's brother (Ronnie)from Bristol.
Within a day or two, I received an e-mail from Chas confirming the link!
Neither knew of each others existance, and by pure chance had both corresponded with me.
If it hadn't have been for this website then neither would have known of each other.

A RESULT!
The next three photographs have since been kindly supplied by Chas.
