Have you ever wondered who your ancestors were and where they came from? I have! When I was a boy of about 11 years old I used to cycle around the local villages and explore.
On one particular day I went to the nearby village of Shilton, there I remember walking through the graveyard and reading the headstones. Right up in one corner of the graveyard was a gravestone for a Thomas Henry Trinder. I was amazed because up until that point I had never heard of any other Trinder's other than my father, his brothers and my Grandparents.
Then in 2001 I decided to try and trace my family tree, and would you believe it? Thomas Henry Trinder turned out to be my Great Grandfather!
Since then I have compiled a list of over 130 names of people who all stem from Thomas Henry Trinder. These include the names of his brother George's family who have long since moved away. Some date back a little earlier. Unfortunately due to some missing Parish records I am unable to link back any further, but there are Trinder's recorded in the village as far back as 1701, the earliest being the baptism of a John Trinder, son of Richard on 16 October of that year.
I have also searched the National Burial Index and found the following entries for Trinder at Shilton.
Burial Date | Forename | Surname | Age | County | Place / Details |
1798 | Jane | TRINDER | | Oxfordshire | Shilton, Holy Rood |
Because some of the Parish records are missing, and the burial date precedes any census records, I have been unable to directly link Jane to my tree. Although I firmly believe that if she came from a small village such as Shilton, she must be related in some way or other.
Burial Date | Forename | Surname | Age | County | Place / Details |
1842 | Hannah | TRINDER | 73 | Oxfordshire | Shilton, Holy Rood |
1845 | Thomas | TRINDER | 77 | Oxfordshire | Shilton, Holy Rood |
The two names above are the earliest confirmed names on my tree and are the Grandparents of Thomas Henry Trinder.
Thomas Henry Trinder was born in 1860 and died in 1934. He was married to Elizabeth Jane Rodway and they had 13 children. The picture on the top left is an early picture of him while the picture on the top right is part of a much larger photo which I have cropped, it shows the local brass band of which Thomas was a keen member.
The bottom left picture shows him in his garden all set to go shooting.
The bottom right is a much older picture of him outside "Chestnut Cottage" in Shilton, and the centre picture is of his gravestone in Shilton graveyard.
One thing I have heard aboout Thomas is that he always liked to wear a flower on his lapel, and on three of these pictures and also on the group photo below it is certainly evident. |
Here is Thomas Henry Trinder's Obituary from a local newspaper.

Unfortunately over the passage of time communications have broken down and I only know of the where abouts of 11 of them.
Here is a list of the 13 with a picture if available along with the place and year of their birth.

It is a picture of Thomas Henry Trinder with his wife Elizabeth and 4 of their sons.
The two in the rear of the photograph are (left) Harry Thomas Trinder and (right) Thomas Henry Trinder junior, front left is Albert Edward Trinder and front right is my Grandfather George William Trinder.
